The tie rod is part of the Ackermann steering. It establishes the connection between the steering lever and the articulation point from the knuckle (hub carrier).In general, two tie rods are installed on a steered axle. A spongy feeling in the steering, semi-worn tires are an indication of a defective tie rod.
